FAQs

Applying for a job

Which countries are included in the jobs@bat system?

We are currently introducing a new global online recruitment system and by the middle of 2013 the system will be truly global and include all our main recruiting markets. In the meantime we will be deploying the system on a phased basis starting with the UK, Africa and Middle East. So, for a limited time we will have different methods of searching and applying for jobs at British American Tobacco (BAT); in some cases you will need to contact local companies and in others you will be able to apply to jobs using the 'soon-to-be' global online recruitment system. Please bear with us during this transition as we move towards a more user-friendly way for you to start a career at BAT. The 'Apply Now' page on our careers site gives clear guidance on how to search for jobs.

What happens to my application after I have submitted it?

You will receive an immediate email confirmation that your application has been received along with details of your reference number. Within two days of sending your online application, you will receive an email confirming whether or not you meet our initial criteria for the specific job you applied for.

If your application meets our initial criteria, you will progress to the next stage of our selection process. It is likely you will be invited to complete one or more online ability tests or you may be contacted by one of our recruiters to discuss the next steps in selection - for example, arrangements for interview. Your profile will also be retained in our recruiting database for possible matches against future open positions.

You can also check your progress through the selection process by logging into your account and clicking on the 'Job application status' link.

If your application does not meet our initial criteria, you will not be considered further for that specific job. However, your profile will be kept in our recruiting database for our recruiters to search for possible matches against future positions. Please also come back to visit our careers site to look for new vacancies or you can set up search agents so you are automatically notified when jobs matching your preferences become available.

How long will it take to review my CV?

We handle all applications in a timely manner. You will receive an acknowledgement e-mail after you submit your CV for a specific job, and within 48 hours you will be notified whether or not you have met the minimum requirements for the role. It may take up to six weeks to review your application internally. We will contact you to confirm next steps in the selection process. For those who are not suitable for the position, we will automatically keep your details in our system for future opportunities.

If I receive an email saying that I am not being considered for a job, can I be reconsidered?

As part of the online application process you will have answered questions to determine whether you meet the minimum requirements described in the job description. If you do not meet the minimum requirements for a specific job, you will not be considered for the job. However, we encourage you to continue to review jobs that match your profile and apply to those you are interested in and where your qualifications match the requirements described in the job description.

What should I do if I have a query about the online job application process?

Please click on 'help' link at any stage of your application.

How can I verify that my CV/resume has been properly submitted and/or received?

Each time you apply for a position at BAT, you will receive an immediate confirmation email acknowledging that your application has been received, and all your contact information, profile and CV/résumé are made available to the recruiter handling that position.

What sort of questions will I be asked during the application process, and how will my answers be used?

In the course of your application to BAT we will request responses to specific questions. Some are to match your skills and qualifications with the role and others are to ensure we comply with applicable laws and BAT's business policies. If you are invited to interview you should be prepared to answer questions about your past experience and to provide as detailed and specific examples as possible.

Can I submit my resume/CV without applying for a specific position?

You may submit your resume/CV speculatively in the system as our recruiters will search for candidates in our database. However, your best chance of being considered for a role at BAT is to apply to a specific role that matches your skills and experience, so please continue to review jobs that meet your profile and remember you can set up search agents so you are automatically notified when jobs matching your preferences become available.

Do you accept applications by mail?

We prefer candidates to apply for roles online. However, if you are unable to do so via our system, for example because you are using assistive technologies, please write to us and we will advise you of what to do next. You can click on the relevant country under 'Apply Now' to find company telephone and address details.

Having problems?

If you are experiencing problems you should first view our system requirements to ensure your settings are configured correctly.

I did not receive a confirmation email after submitting an application for a job. What should I do?

After submitting your application to a job you should receive an email confirming that your application has been received. It may take up to 48 hours for you to receive this message. If, after 48 hours, you have still not received the email confirmation:

  • check that you submitted to the job using the correct email address and that there were no misspellings
  • check your junk email or spam email folder in case it has been misdirected there

Who can I contact if I'm having problems?

If you are having difficulty using the online application, please contact us at the email address below explaining the problem. Please note: We do not accept job applications at this email address recruitmentadmin@bat.com

If you have questions about the recruitment process for a specific application, please contact the recruitment team managing that vacancy. You can find contact details for local companies by clicking on the relevant country under the 'Apply Now' section on the careers site.

Can I remove my details from the system if I am no longer interested in applying for BAT roles?

Yes, you can request to be deleted from the system, but please note that this may take up to 30 days to be activated. Certain information related to your particular application may be retained to meet legal or records retention requirements in your country.
